Take It With You

Some ways to take the campground data with you are:
  • In your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch , or
  • Download the data files (below) and put them in your laptop mapping software (buy "Street Atlas" by DeLorme or "Streets and Trips" by Microsoft, about $35), or
  • Download the data files (below) and put them in your GPS; and print a State or portion thereof
Download Data Files

For your GPS or mapping software. NOTE: We will be adding to and correcting these data, so come back here and get a new file periodically for updates.

NOTE: If there is a discrepancy between the on-line map and the data files below, believe the on-line map because it is updated more often.

These are .csv files (text files which have a comma between fields), intended to be multi-purpose. You can open them and edit them with EXCEL or other  spreadsheet program.  The first 3 fields/columns are for your auto GPS. For Garmin, you should be able to input these directly - for other GPSs, you may have to reformat them - see your GPS documentation. The remaining fields separate out the data so you can manipulate them in a spreadsheet for other purposes - e.g., you might wish to reformat these on a spreadsheet for your mapping software (DeLorme, Streets & Trips, MapPoint, etc). There are so many different formats we are unable to directly output them all.

NOTE: For information about how to input these to your auto GPS (Garmin, Tom Tom or Magellan), see POI-FACTORY . If you need a GPX file, as for a hiking (handheld) GPS, try GPSVizualizer or gps babel or POI Editor to convert .csv to .gpx.

The fields in the below .csv files are in this order: lon, lat, gps composite field (all the following data fields compacted into one field for a GPS or mapping software display), 4 letter campground code, campground name, type, phone, comments, sites, el(ft), hookups, amenities. IMPORTANT: All of these codes are explained in the map legend on the main page.  The  "comments" are sometimes very important.   The "hookups" field is repeated in the "amenitites" field.

Last update of these files was June 7, 2010. What's new: All Canadian Provinces that touch on the US are included, many more city/county campgrounds, much more RV hookup info and other campground "amenity" info.

Download A Few Individual Campground Coordinates to GPS
If you just want a few, you can do this from Google maps to your Garmin and (I believe) Tom-Tom gps, and maybe others.  Here is how it is done with Garmin, not sure about TomTom procedure:
  • Attach your GARMIN gps to your computer with a USB cable
  • On our map, click on the campground symbol
  • Under “driving directions”,  click on “GO” (no start point needed)
  • A new Google map appears with a label at campground
  • On the new Google map, at the top, click on “search maps”
  • A different color label appears on the campground
  • Click on “send” at the upper right of the Google map
  • Under “send to”, select “GPS”
  • Edit the name and send it over
  • It will appear as a “Favorite” in your Garmin GPS
